APACHE AGATES

One of the Most Mysterious Agates of Mexico

Apache agate is considered one of the most unusual and mysterious agates found anywhere in the world. Discovered in the desert landscapes of northern Chihuahua, Mexico, this remarkable agate is famous for its vivid color contrasts and dramatic internal patterns.

The finest Apache agates display brilliant shades of bright red, vivid orange, and deep yellow, often appearing to float within contrasting layers of blue or lavender agate. These striking colors create patterns that resemble splashes of paint, flowing folds of fabric, or swirling veils, giving each specimen a distinctive artistic character.

A defining feature of Apache agate is its rough exterior. The nodules typically have a finely pitted, lime-green outer rind, which makes them easy to distinguish from other Mexican agates even before they are cut.

The most beautiful specimens often come from nodules that show natural cavities on their surfaces. It is around these cavities that the most dramatic patterns and color combinations tend to form.

Apache agate occurs near Rancho La Viñata, approximately five miles northwest of Ejido El Apache and about thirty miles southeast of Nuevo Casas Grandes in Chihuahua, Mexico.

The deposit was first discovered in 1957 by Luis Arzola and Jesús Gamon of Ciudad Juárez. The area was worked intermittently by hand for several years until 1968, when collector and miner Benny Fenn filed a claim on the deposit. Working together with Harold Jorgenson, the area was mined with heavier equipment, producing hundreds of pounds of remarkable agate specimens.

Today because of the many years of rain and washes, the mine has been filled in with clay and dirt since the floods, Apache agate is rarely found, making fine pieces especially prized among collectors.

One of the most famous specimens from this locality is a scenic agate known as “The Apache Hooded Owl,” a natural formation whose patterns resemble the face of an owl. The specimen weighs approximately 1.5 pounds and is considered one of the most iconic scenic agates ever discovered.
