The Most Celebrated Agate of Mexico

Laguna agates are widely regarded as the most famous and sought-after agates from Mexico. Their reputation comes not only from their beauty but also from the remarkable variety of colors and patterns that appear within each nodule.

The finest Laguna agates display dramatic fortification banding and a vivid spectrum of colors including red, pink, orange, yellow, lavender, purple, beige, white, and gray. Many specimens contain striking color combinations that create strong visual contrast — sometimes even “clashing” colors such as purple and red or orange and lavender that make the patterns appear unusually vibrant.

One optical phenomenon commonly seen in Laguna agates is known as the shadow effect. This illusion of depth occurs between parallel bands inside the stone, creating a sense that the layers of agate recede inward. This subtle dimensional effect gives the best Laguna specimens a dynamic visual character that changes as the stone is moved under light.

Laguna agates typically form as rounded nodules within volcanic host rock. The exterior of these nodules often shows a distinctive coating of blue-green celadonite, a mineral that forms a thin outer rind. The surface of the nodules is usually rough, pitted, and irregular, often resembling the texture of a potato.

Most Laguna nodules range in size from that of a small egg to a large cantaloupe, although the average specimen typically measures between 2 and 5 inches in diameter.

The Laguna agate deposits are located east of Estación Ojo Laguna in Chihuahua, Mexico, approximately 145 miles south of El Paso, Texas. The area hosts numerous agate-producing concessions and has long been one of the most important agate localities in the world.
